Super glue is an amazing adhesive that bonds things — instantly. That’s good, usually. But accidents happen, as you will see this morning.
Before we get into my worst superglue accident, welcome to “Mornings with Bishop Robert” — it’s obviously no accident that you’re here, and I hope you stick with it until the end of this message. My 95 year old mother-in-law has lived with us for the last seven years or so. She’s an absolute joy, and my wife and I are so blessed to have her with us. Naturally, there are some elements of care that are required. The most regular of her care needs is administering her eye drops each evening. I know what you’re thinking! And, yes, I did. Mom had two different eye drop bottles; one needs to be kept in the refrigerator, but the other one she keeps on her desk. One night I accidentally grabbed a bottle of nail glue that was ALSO sitting on her desk and, before we knew it, I had put a drop right into her eye. I’ll spare you the details of the fiasco that followed, except to say that the optometrist assured us that the best thing to do was wait it out for a few days while the eye took care of the problem all by itself. As it turns out there’s nothing strong enough to separate the glue from the eye without destroying the eye in the process. But the doctor was right, and the eye was able to cleans itself.
Well, in case you were wondering, I’m not the only person who’s ever had a problem with super glue. And some of the stories I found as I researched this morning’s lesson were comical. Amy had used super glue to repair something in science class and unknowingly gotten glue across the side of her hand. A boy named Justin was reaching for something at the same time she did and their hands touched. The connection was instant. Too embarrassed to tell the teacher, they spent the next three classes “holding hands” and then walked to Amy’s house after school to put nail polish remover on their hands and get them unstuck. I read about a 3 year old who glued her pet cat’s paws to the carpet so she could teach him to stay! It took scissors to free the cat. I could literally go on for hours with story after story, but I have to give you a spiritual application to the super glue lesson.
And here it is. Today’s verse says LET US HOLD FAST TO THE CONFESSION OF OUR HOPE WITHOUT WAVERING
I’m not sure how the software that handles the translated versions of “Mornings with Bishop Robert” will handle that phrase, so let me tell you that the English phrase “HOLD FAST” means to be resolute, to take hold of something tightly and very firmly. It’s an image of seizing something and unswervingly refusing to let it go.
So “hold fast” is a pretty good image of how we are to approach our faith in Jesus Christ. But the good news is actually GREAT NEWS – faith is like super glue. Not only do you hold on to it, but it holds onto you. And the bond is instant.
As soon as you place your confidence in Christ, you can hold fast to your confidence and your hope of eternal life. Jesus tells us that He’s going to return for us, and that He will bring us to where He is; and so we should HOLD FAST so that no one will seize the crown of reward that comes from a life dedicated to serving Him. His grace gives us the strength and the strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope He has set before us.
And HE HOLDS FAST TO YOU, as well.
As it turns out, there’s nothing strong enough to separate you from Jesus without destroying your life in the process.
